We used the same 13" tiles that we have on the floor for the shower walls, and then added a chocolate brown glass subway tile as an accent.
Jeff had laid the Kerdi floor system and we started with the walls. Having never tiled full walls before, it was an experience, but one we will repeat again in our other 2 bathrooms.
Halfway there with the stones, and I am liking the look. Setting the stones one by one |
Complete and grouted. Can't wait to try it out! |
I love how this looks! Now that it's been a little while, how is it holding up?
ReplyDeleteStill looks great. Thanks for visiting our blog..
DeleteLooking to do this between my tile and wood floor; checking to see if it's still holding up great! How did you seal it?
DeleteLooks great! I have the same stone floor in my shower. If you only take one piece of advice, take this.....SEAL it well!! And seal it often! Seal your stones and seal the grout. Don't skimp on the sealer (aquamix and 501 are best) I didn't know at the time.
ReplyDeleteI have the same color grout and it looks so dirty and grimy. (I clean my shower weekly). Do not use bleach products as it will pith the grout and cause it to look dirtier. Wish I had know this. I want to rip mine up and start over.
What is '501'?
DeleteI have a shower floor that someone painted over and it is peeling, but not quickly enough. I'd like to use this pebble idea to place over all that peeling mess. Any suggestions as to how to apply the pebbles to an existing shower floor? what kind of grout, etc would I use?
A contractor did this but sadly the grout started crumbling and yes, it got really dirty. I'm not sure how to repair. Any advice would be appreciated and I'm willing to learn to fix and how to maintain it. Thanks in advance.
DeleteI would think you would have to dig out some of the old grout and regrout it and then as Beth said above make sure you seal it and reseal it often.
DeleteThanks, I'll give it a try and make sure I seal it and reseal as needed.

DeleteYou can get grout pens and repaint the grout with it then seal it
DeleteStill looks great. With all of the grout lines they do have to be scrubbed regularly and I agree that sealing is the key. Probably time to do that again, but we still love the feel of the stones on our feet!
ReplyDeleteI have some of those stones from the dollar store & I tried to talk my other half into doing this in his shower, but he says it would hurt his feet!?!? It looks awesome just like I had pictured in my mind!! Lucky you!!
ReplyDeleteIt did take a little convincing to get my handy hubby on board, but he agrees that it looks and feels great.
DeleteThis can be done over an existing shower floor? Seems I'm always scrubbing the shower stall floor and this would be beautiful to look at. I could even go up the sides for the three or four inch lip around the floor and all I would need do is lift the drain to go onto the pebbles is what I'm thinking?
ReplyDeleteI am not sure how it would adhere to an existing shower floor. You would have to do some research on that as I am not sure that the grout will hold. Ours was a new build so we used the waterproof membrane. Let me know if you have moved forward with this.
DeleteFrom experience......anything that is going to need grout needs the best and most appropriate backer to grab on to. I tiled a floor over linoleum it cracked inseveral places and took less than five minutes to rip it up. So go talk to an expert and find out what you can put over existing floor so your hard work won't go to waste.

DeleteStones and grout need solid non-movable surface beneath or the grout will crack first time it's stepped on. I wanted to do this myself but shower pan will have to be removed FIRST!
DeleteHi Laura!
ReplyDeleteWe recently featured your DIY pebble shower floor in our round up on floor projects at http://www.decoratingyoursmallspace.com/do-it-yourself-floors/
Great project! Please let us know if you have any issues you would like us to correct with your project feature, and we hope you enjoy some great traffic from it! Have an amazing week!
Thanks for featuring our shower floor on your do it yourself floors. It was truly a labour of love. It still looks great and is something anyone can tackle.
DeleteThis shower floor looks great, but is it slippery? I can't afford to take a fall in the shower.
ReplyDeleteNot slippery at all and gives a nice little massage on your feet.
DeleteI use a mixture of 2 tablespoons each of ammonia, vinegar and heavy duty laundry detergent to 32 oz. water in a spray bottle. Soak shower walls, floor and doors well. Use a old nylon broom with to scrub walls and floor and a soft sponge to clean the doors. Works like magic.
ReplyDeleteThe other mixture that I find that works is some baking soda sprinkled over the floor and a mixture of vinegar and dawn in a spray bottle. Let it sit and then scrub if necessary and rinse.
DeleteHow much pebble did you have to use for the shower project? We are considering this for our remodel and wondering how far a five pound bag will go.
ReplyDeleteHi. Thanks for visiting. I don't remember for sure but I think it was approximately 30 smaller bags from the dollar store. You do have to sort through them as there might be some pebbles that are too small or too rough. I think one of those bags would be approximately 1/4 pound. Let me know how it goes. I would love to see a picture of your project. Have fun with it.
ReplyDeleteHola! Me encanto su proyecto, espero hacerlo para mi baño, saludos desde Mexico, D.F.

ReplyDeleteI have finished putting pebbles i found at the beach on to my kitchen wall above the sink.I first started doing a small area and now its all the way up to the ceiling.going to grout using a medium gray and then try and find a beautiful color to accent my wall does anyone have any suggestions for cabinet paint color?
ReplyDeleteGo to the paint section and pick out several colors you like. Bring those samples home and cut out and tape to your rocks. Let them hang for about a week. After 24 hours pull the one you like the least and remember to check them out at different times of the day too. It's amazing how you will find the perfect color by the end of the week.

DeleteSo, several years on, how is this holding up? Have you found it gets dirty easily, or that you've beeded to reseal? I would love to do this in our reno, but have reservations about the amount of grout that would need cleaning.
ReplyDeleteWe did this in our new bathroom. Bought the pebbles in sheets from a vendor in California.... Stunning Ours was done 3 years ago and still looks great. I wash it with Bar Keepers and a brush
DeleteCan you tell me the Vendor name you used and any specifics? I like this idea;sounds time efficient. Do yiu have same issues with cleaning grout and resealing as Somethingfromnothing??

DeleteI am thinking of using pebbles on my shower floor. I don't know whether to set them in a waterproof cement or a use one of these resin type mixes. I have a concrete floor. I could lay a rough fibreglass tray and use a polyester resin poured over much smaller stones. If I use the cement based adhesive, to set the pebbles in. I will need s grout that fills quite large gaps. I haven't seen any in my local diy store
ReplyDeleteYou said setting the stones one by one, but couldn't you put down a bag at a time and spread them in? Maybe rearranging as needed?
ReplyDeleteYou can do this a lot cheaper by purchasing river rock from Lowes. .5 cubic feet for $3.
ReplyDeleteYou can do this a lot cheaper by purchasing river rock from Lowes. .5 cubic feet for $3.
ReplyDeleteHow is that cheaper than a dollar a bag? The bags cover about the same amount of space. And I have never seen river rocks at Lowes for that price. What department are you talking about Cheryl?
DeleteHi Kari, I work at Lowe's and also have purchased the small bags at the Dollar Tree and trust me the bag at Lowe's will cover a lot more area and they are $3.78 for the .5 cubic feet bag, and anywhere from $4.15 to $5.48 for a 5 lb. bag. If your lucky you can find bags that are damaged or have some missing and they will sell them for $1 or $2.
DeleteI did the same thing for free! The local landscape supply company that sells rivet rock by the ton let me pick out what I needed for free! Since they sell it by the ton, they said what I needed was nothing to them, so I picked through the rocks to choose what I wanted and the result was awesome! Of course I had to buy adhesive and grout, but can't get any cheaper for the rocks!
