Wedding Sign

I have been very busy coming up with some ideas on how to make our wedding very personal and intimate. I really wanted to make a lot of things myself to help make it feel as intimate as possible. Saying that, I bought this ugly old mirror for $7.00 and transformed it into a sign for our wedding. Here's how.

Find an old mirror, painting, or picture for super cheap at a thrift store or yard sale.

Prime the entire thing and let it sit for about 2 hours.

Then paint everything but the frame in chalk board spray paint.

Cover the chalk board paint in newspaper and painters tape.

Paint the frame in whatever colour you like.
Then with chalk or paint, write whatever you would like your sign to say.

Costs
Mirror $7.00 at Goodwill
Chalk Board Spray Paint $6.47 at Home Depot
Cream Spray Paint already had it
Total: $13.47

Pizza Bites

We hosted another Superbowl party this year and again I was wondering what the heck I would serve that was quick easy and cheap. This is a great appetizer that you would make somewhat ahead of time. It was a huge hit and everyone wanted to know what my secret is.

Take your dough and place it on floured wax paper and roll it out

Then spread with garlic salt, seasoning, cheeses and pepperoni.

Tightly roll them into a long log then cut into 1" pieces.

Pizza Bites
Store Bought Pizza Dough (the one that I got was in a bag)
1 teaspoon garlic salt
2 teaspoons Italian Seasoning
1 cup sliced pepperoni, chopped
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or Kraft Italiano)
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Divide pizza dough in half. Roll each half into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick and 12 inches long. Just think about the size of a piece of paper. Sprinkle each half with equal amounts of garlic salt, basil, cheeses and pepperoni. Starting at a short end, roll dough up tightly to form a log. Slice into 1-inch pieces. Place rolls on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes or until
browned on top. Serve with warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Pineapple Plant

So here is something pretty cool and I never had heard of this before. So simple and easy might be something pretty cool to do with your kids.

All you need to do is take a pineapple.

Cut off the top.

Put it in a plant with some dirt. Then wait

Isn't that cool? I thought this was pretty neat.

Buffet makeover

This is a project that I did a few years ago, but a great example of a diamond in the rough. I found this great piece at  Fayes in Sebringville Ontario, just outside of Stratford.  This store has an ecclectic mix of treasure.  Just be sure you have devoted enough time to browse thoroughly.  You don't want to be rushed in this assortment of funky and fun memorabilia and antiques.

The detail on this buffet was what caught my eye. And again, some people would have left if shabby chic, but that didn't really fit where I wanted it to go, and so the work began.

I took the back piece off completely, and carefully removed the scrollwork details in order to strip all of the paint.

Scrapers, steel wook and chemical strippers were my friends!

On first glance you might think I was crazy to have spent $200 on the buffet, and as I was stripping the  paint, I might have concurred.

However after much time spent in the garage, my diamond in the rough, is now a true gem in my eat in kitchen.  I love the contrast in the decorative carved mouldings and the piece itself.

The hardware is original, and even has some paint left on it which gives it a unique pantina (better than saying that I gave up on trying to remove all of it).

This buffet is a great storage space for silverware and  large serving platters, and the bottom drawer stores my table linens.  Watch for an upcoming blog about the buffet that this treasure replaced.
